Moving can be one of the most stressful events in your lifetime. To alleviate the stress New Zealand Van Lines have put together a helpful moving guide to complete important tasks, and set you up for a successful relocation.
4 - 6 Weeks Before Your Move ...
- Declutter! Now is the perfect time to have a clean out, sell or give away unwanted items to a local charity to help people in need.
- Confirm packing and moving dates with NZ Van Lines.
- Notify insurance company and cancel or transfer policies (life, house, car & contents)
- Ensure important documents / records are complete.
3 Weeks Before Your Move ...
- Advise your service providers of your change of address .
- Return things borrowed, collect those items that you loaned.
- Dispose of all paints and flammables (we cannot move or store such items) or leave for new occupant.
- Gas bottles must be purged if we are moving them.
- Cleaning arrangements for settlement day.

If You're Moving Overseas ...
- Ensure passports, visas and travel bookings are finalised
- Notify bank and credit card companies
- Do you need to transfer funds? Contact XE for the best currency exchange deals.
Just Before Your Move ...
- Clean out medicine cabinet and dispose of unwanted or expired medication.
- Empty fuel from mowers and other petrol equipment.
- Remove food from fridge / freezer and defrost (at least 24 hours before moving), and make sure it is clean and dry.
- Collect any drycleaning.
- Ensure all travel documents, passports etc. are set aside for taking with you.
- If you are moving within New Zealand, water all your pot plants well, two to three days before moving.
- Disconnect all electrical appliances including plumbed in items i.e. washing machine, fridge
- Moving with kids? If possible ask family or friends to look after them for moving day (s).
- Arrange a simple breakfast for moving day that’s easy to clean up
On Moving Day ...
- Be on hand, or have an authorised person on-site to answer questions.
- Make sure all travel and other important items are set aside to avoid any possibility of these items being packed, especially house and car keys.
- Have a last look around to ensure nothing has been overlooked with the Team Leader.
- Sign the inventory with the Team Leader and retain your copy in a safe place.
- Gas bottles must be purged if we are moving them.
- Leave any manuals, remotes, keys etc. for the new owner.

- Electoral Office

- Insurance Company - transfer or cancel policies i.e. health, house and contents, vehicle
- Doctor and Dentist - obtain copy of records
- Lawyer
- Place of Worship
- Kindy / Daycare / Schools - obtain copy of records
- Clubs i.e. sports, gym, crafts
- Publications i.e. newspaper, magazine
- Police Department (if you hold a Firearms licence)
- Council - rates, animal licences etc.
- Don’t forget to tell your relatives and friends
