Moving in together guide

Posted in New Zealand, Moving

So, you’ve decided to take the next step in your relationship and you’re moving in together! You should be excited, smitten and, naturally, a little nervous. Don’t overthink it, like whether you’ll still have privacy and a sense of independence – moving in together doesn’t mean you lose these things! You also shouldn’t be worried about your partner discovering you have a couple of gross habits, like biting your nails… your partner probably has some of these too. Instead, focus on the practical side of things. Let’s go through our ultimate moving-in-together guide to try give you a head start.

1) Find the perfect home

Whether you’re buying or renting, the first step is to find the perfect home. We don’t necessarily mean the ‘home of your dreams’, but a home that’s perfect for your current situation. Think about size, location, cost per week and condition of the home. Do you have pets, or are you going to adopt some down the line? Think about all of these factors when choosing a home.

2) Make a list of what you each have

Now it’s time to make a list of what you can bring to the table – literally! Write down all of your possessions and compare lists with your partner. If there are doubles of appliances and furniture like washing machines, couches and dining tables, they may need to be condensed down to one, so decide on what you’re keeping and what you’re selling online. Don’t worry about having double the cutlery, glassware, bedding, etc. – these always come in handy. If you’ve got the space for an extra fridge, it’s good to have a spare just in case.

3) Agree on a ‘contract’

Discuss and agree on a ‘contract’ that sets the guidelines of living together. For example, who’s account is the rent going to come out of? Who’s taking care of the electricity, water and gas bills? How will you decide on paying for groceries? Take care of these before moving in.

4) Find a team of movers

Book an expert team of movers with great reviews and great prices too. Let them know how much stuff you’ve got and see whether they have an appropriate vehicle in their fleet to get your stuff into the new home.

5) Celebrate!

Now that you’re all moved in, it’s time to celebrate. You guys have done something amazing and are well and truly adult-ing properly!
